Not even the ones controlled by The Man. They went home, ate their dinner, watched TV, and went to sleep, living calm, docile lives that didn't bother anyone. The zombies are out there, driving, lurking, with an opinion on everything and we don't even know what they want! Or we just plain can't figure out why.

They want baby girls not to wear boys' clothes (seriously, someone told a friend of mine that while they were strolling their newborn through the grocery store), they want to back up without looking in their rear view mirror and almost run over innocent passersby (happened to me the other day, true story), and they won't, under any circumstances, give up their control freakiness as they clutch, grab, and groan unintelligibly. Too much information, too much social media, too much stimulation with absence of thought, is having its effect.

So here's something to actually think about: my essay, Love and Dystopia, which was recently featured on Love Romance Passion. Don't over think it. I did that for you.

The world didn't end in December, but those preaching gloom and doom say we are now at the beginning of the end. It is no wonder that readers have a fascination with love and dystopia. Some of the most popular books today, such as The Hunger Games series or even Water for Elephants, have strong romantic elements centered upon the fringes of a dystopian setting. The Hunger Games takes place in the post-war United States, dubbed the civilization of Panem, and Water for Elephants is set against the backdrop of a failing circus on the fringe of bankruptcy during the Depression. Both of these stories would not be as outstanding as they were if either the dystopian element or the romantic element was taken away. Both of these stories would not have the romantic element if the dystopian element was not added to the plot's formula. The idea of dystopia existed in these two stories on both the macrocosmic level, as in The Hunger Games where a society lived it, and on a microcosmic level, as in Water for Elephants, where a small circus struggled to survive in a society where almost every other factor worked against it, even the owners themselves.

Thus can the same with life, or romance as we know it in life. Our greatest romance is found in our greatest time of need, where we are emotionally downtrodden and in need of more than a good friend or casual lover. We become in need of something to make our lives meaningful; something which takes away the befuddlement we feel when faced with the human condition of loneliness. The realization of this human condition is dystopia on a microcosmic level.

In fiction, the human condition of loneliness is the essence of conflict itself. The demons or angels that accompany this realization are manifested in our supporting characters, our antagonists, and our hero or heroine's actions. Love and dystopia are two sides of the same coin. Some may argue that Utopia should make up the flip side of that coin, but I beg to disagree. Utopia and Dystopia can both be regarded as the soil upon which love can grow. That makes love an absolutely wonderful and divine aspect of human life, a beacon of hope we can all count on, no matter where we live or what environment we are surrounded with. We can always count on the proliferation of love.

My newest work, The Ashes of Windsor, is the story of two teens who are in love and struggling to survive in the dystopian environment of New York after nuclear war. My sensitive skin tends toward being a combination of normal and dry, so the products I've recommended below work well for this skin type. For a detailed analysis of products that will work best for your skin, skip the cosmetic counters and go straight to a licensed esthetician or dermatologist who specializes in aesthetic skin care.

The First Step: Cleanse
Skin needs help regenerating as you age and shedding dead skin cells, so help it along with a facial cleanser rich in Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) or glycolic acid. Most AHAs are fruit based for the purists. I use M.D. Forte II, a product made with glycolic acid.

Clarisonic has a great line of cleansing tools that are gaining popularity. Make an investment in one, especially if you're skin is maturing. You'll be glad you did.

The Second Step: Steam
Fill a large bowl with hot water, lean your face in, and cover your head with a towel. Allow impurities to sweat out of your skin for 5 to 10 minutes. Pat your face dry.

The Third Step: Exfoliation
I recommend picking up an at-home microdermabrasian system for this step. A simple rotating tool with a sponge and an exfoliating cream in a kit will work just fine. Dermanew makes a fine and long-lasting set. Or you can also purchase an exfoliating wash with granules that can be massaged over the skin, further refining the topmost layer.

The Fourth Step: Mask
Your favorite hydrating mask and cucumbers over the eyes. Spaaaah... For sensitive/dry skin, I recommend Skinceuticals B5 Hydrating Masque. This can tend to be very moisturizing, so I usually wash it off after five or ten minutes, but there is the option to leave the mask on overnight. Another mask I love is the Arcon Wine Hydrating Mask. It gives your skin the feel you would have after a mud bath, that of a smooth, silky sheen.

The Fifth Step: Tone and Moisturize
Spray an antioxidant mist or opt for a toner that can be applied with a cotton ball. I like to use Dermologica's Antioxidant Mist, fortified with antioxidants and vitamins to refresh the skin.

For a moisturizer for the dry/sensitive skin type, always use a cream in the winter and a lotion in the summer, and always, always make sure your moisturizer contains sunscreen. I use Sea Results H20 Cream in the winter and La Roche Posay Toleriane Hydrating Lotion in the summer. Don't forget to slather your pucker with some of La Roche Posay's Ceralip. This product has hyaluoronic acid, which attracts moisture to your kisser.

Here's to facing the New Year with great skin! Cheers!

Now Available for Kindle and eBook Formats
5.0 out of 5 stars Wow..absolute enjoyable reading... December 23, 2012 By 4u2read Format:Kindle Edition A quick and enjoyable read. For some, their prayers were answered through a dating service like Match.com where they could find exactly what they were looking for in a photo or wonderfully puffy description of their perfect mate in a blurb or two. My husband and I happened to meet the old fashioned way. At a disco dancing club. Long after disco was considered hot. Nothing more romantic than stopping in place while doing the hustle and seeing the bolts of lightning flash as you see your children in your true love's face while he is lit up by strobe lights and those funky eyeball things reflecting off the disco ball. I remember it like it was yesterday.

Some people's prayers were answered during Tuesday's election, although higher taxes weren't in my prayers so unfortunately, I received a big, emphatic "No, Liz" from my higher power. I just have a feeling that even though President Obama has asked only the rich to pay their "fair share" once we jump off that fiscal cliff, he's going to be giving a speech on how all of us, meaning those who have steady jobs and pay taxes, will have to pitch in and help this country get out of deficit hole it is in and to bear with him and blah blah blah.

I'm going to get down off this soapbox and find someplace optimistic to go to with you. The holidays are coming! You might not want to spend a diddly damn penny just to see whether or not you're going to be paying in 2013, but I grew up in a family that lived very frugally and so the holidays were never about getting stuff for me. Now that I'm older and more aware, I realize that having what is called an "attitude of gratitude" is the most important way to motivate yourself, every day.

Ways to Adapt An Attitude of Gratitude

*  Get physical and connect
Hug your friends, hug your family, hug people you know who you haven't seen in a while. There is a gorgeous light in all of us, and we should use that light to connect with those we love by begin close. If you're not the touchy feely type, make eye contact, choose your words with care and begin in the third person when advising. State facts instead of consequences. It works when speaking with children and it works when speaking with adults, too. For example, instead of saying "You always forget to use good manners," simply say "I'm sorry, it's hard for me to respond when you talk like that. Could you try again?" This bounces the ball back into the other person's court without negativity, and being addressed properly will allow you to continue to freely give to others without resentment.

*  Affirmations
State your intention for the day. Who are you and what are your goals. For example, when I woke up I told myself this morning that today I'm going to write a new blog post, quit reading political articles (oops, couldn't help myself!) and sit down and write all morning while the children are at school And I told myself I'm a good writer, which is subjective but hey, if you don't believe you are good at what you do, it's time to switch careers. Or practice more. We all get better with practice.

*  Positive Energy
If there's one thing I've noticed when talking politics or being talked to about politics, the subject sucks one dry as if they were being bitten by that big brown house spider us folks who live up in the hills always know is lurking under the toy bin. So spread positive energy around the world simply by asking people how they are doing and finding out what makes them tick. There is beauty in even the darkest subjects when another can find it and pull it out. Tell jokes, share funny stories, or just exercise with somebody and create that warm, wonderful feeling of togetherness and camaraderie.

Although I was Romney supporter when it came to economic policy (most definitely not social policy), I had a field day with my friends over the "Binders of Women" comment. That's just funny. Nothing like getting binders of women on your desk. I'll bet some men out there would loooove to see some binders full of women. Oh, Santa, please send my unmarried male cousins binders full of women. Heheheh!

*  Be Comfortable Alone
How when are minds are filled with chaotic thoughts? The answer is meditation and breathing control. Picture yourself sitting by a river. The sound of the river is calming and gentle. Perhaps there are birds in the trees and sunlight glistening off of the water. Now picture your troubling thoughts being carried away by the river current, far away from you, and whenever a troubling enters your mind during this exercise, send it down the river as well. There is beauty there in the stillness and clarity of mind. The first time I found it in my late twenties, I knew I finally connected with a force greater than anything I had ever experienced.

*  Give Thanks, Everyday
Think of the things you want. Maybe you want money, power, success, more talent, more beauty. Now let those things go and examine what you have right now. Give thanks for what you have right now. If it is debt, give thanks that debt will help you to become more conscientious about your finances. If it is very little time to do the things you need to do, give thanks for the little time that you have. If it is worry, give thanks that you are smart enough to understand what needs to be fixed.

It is the "attitude of gratitude" that will illuminate your path. Give thanks and take the first step.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Warmly,
Liz

5.0 out of 5 stars "COMPELLING, SIZZLING, INTRIGUING!" July 15, 2012 By Geraldine Ahearn TOP 1000 REVIEWERVINE™ VOICE Format:Kindle Edition Liz R. Do you see the woman's face? Insert scream here. You might simply be thinking, as I did, that someone just had a really dirty camera lens, but I assure you, these are professionals. By the way, if you know of any curses that can befall someone who posts pictures of ghosts, please advise. I googled that and nothing came up. I won't have time to research that. Knock on wood. The weirdest things that have happened since I've posted these pictures is that someone has asked me if I'm the nanny of my own children, praising me for looking so young after I gave her the stink eye, and someone also asked me if I was ever going to get real job. Hellooo, writing is a real job. Though neither are utilized today for their original purpose, spirits seemingly are not aware of that. In the first class swimming pool, which has been closed for more than three decades, women have often been seen appearing in 1930’s style swimming suits wandering the decks near the pool. Others have reported the sounds of splashing and spied wet footprints leading from the deck to the changing rooms. Some have also spied the spirit of a young girl, clutching her teddy bear.

In the second class poolroom, the spirit of another little girl named Jackie is often been seen and heard. The unfortunate girl drowned in the pool during the ship’s sailing days and reputedly refused to move on, as her voice, as well as the sounds of laughter has been captured here.

If you had your choice of a place to haunt, what would it be? I know this due to my lovely server that lists all of the search terms people used to come up with my website. Thankfully, someone searched for "Erotic Gorilla Stories" right when I was hitting a brand new low in life. That definitely brought me a much needed smile.

I've spent a few weeks agonizing over some issues and thinking phrases such as "When Life Hands You Lemons, Make Lemonade," and "Time to make doo doo into chocolate cake" and "Hey, it can't get any worse." Thankfully, none of my friends have served me with these trite comments but with simply a nod of the head and "Oooh, that sucks." You've got to appreciate friends who can truly understand the gravity of the situation and not try to sugar coat it for you. Better to wallow for a few weeks than have a fat head full of hot air.

A good cry today brought me out of the wallowing and got me to thinking about the coping skills I used to recommend to my past therapy clients. Here is a list in case you find yourself with a case of the doldrums:

* Take a hot bath or cold swim
Sometimes a change in body temperature is all we need to refresh ourselves. Light candles, play music, massage your mind with calming thoughts. Picture your future a week from now, a month from now, a year from now. Will you remember this time? If so, will it hurt as much? Envision yourself rising above the conflict or issue and imagine the sense of peace that will accompany that time.

* Give yourself a few minutes to curl up and feel
Be sober and truthful with yourself for as long as it takes for you to work out your sadness. Cry it out, feel the pain, call upon your higher power to help you. Even deep breathing with your eyes closed will help, and may bring you back some of those hours you spent awake worrying.

*Be creative
I believe it was Freud who once said depression is "creativity stifled." Cook a healthy meal from scratch, write a poem, draw or even trace. Focused, physical activity that involves the mind will force your feelings to follow. Often, these activities invoke something pleasurable. Who doesn't love the small of fresh basil being chopped, or the smooth surface of paper before it has been written upon. Savor the process, and don't think too much about making the finished project perfect. The result isn't what counts.

* Let It Go
Take a pen and draw or write out the things you have on your mind. List them all, whether they be something drastic like being thousands of dollars in debt or something minimal like you want to spend more time with your friends and less time working. Then rip up that list or burn it. The things that are most important to you will stick to your mind, and eventually you will give yourself the freedom to do them. The rest will happen in time.

*Remind yourself of the important things
Your children, your pet, your friends, your family. All of them are there for you, whether you want to share your troubles with them or not. They're going to love you no matter what. Even the crappy ones. Why? Because crappy friends and family loooove a miserable sob story and will exhibit feelings of glee when you tell them, which will make your day because you've made someone happy. That's what makes crappy friends and family good to have around. Once in a while.

And if all else fails, you can always do a web search for "Erotic Gorilla Stories."

Stay happy, fellow readers.

Warmly,
Liz

The Visionary Lounge Presents J. Lilley here at The Visionary Lounge to share her latest release with us. J. Lilley, welcome! Could you kindly tell us more about the Shalean Moon Series, your widely anticipated YA Paranormal novels?

Hi, My name is J. Lilley, and I'm really excited about my first ever YA books, which are published on June 1st, from Lycaon Press.

Lycaon is a new publisher, and my book will be their first… and in some ways their second and third. Because the print book has the first three stories in it, on ebook, it's book one.

Where did the idea for this series come from?
From a friend, who was trying, unsuccessfully to find a new shifter book for her daughter's fourteenth birthday. She was bemoaning the fact there was nothing new, nothing different she could buy. So I, who had never even remotely thought about writing YA said, "Oh I'll write one for her!" I did add hastily, "just a short one.'

I knew I had to write shifters, and so asked Doris my friend, what animal was her daughter Rach's favorite. The answer was a leopard. Now I had my animal.

There was no contest as to where I was going to set my story. In the wonderful Trossachs, in central Scotland. A place of mystical doings, of fairies and well… Shaleans now it seems.

The beautiful countryside was my inspiration for the settings, anyone who reads the books will recognize houses, lochs, rocks and hills. But strangely they won't be where they would expect them to be. I've taken liberties with the landscape! Although anyone watching the sun set over the loch, or seeing the snow on the top of the Ben surely won't mind my deception.

That first short 12k story was a hit. Rach loved it, and was pleased the heroine had the same name as her. And as far as I thought, that was that.

Until the day I idly asked a publisher if he knew any YA publishing houses, as I had a short story…

He did, he asked to read it, then told me he was thinking of starting a YA Publishing house. He loved the story…but…

Why is that such a little word with a big meaning? But!

His but was he wanted it twice as long, and thought there should be a series.

I got the news, that the editor loved the idea as well, via Doris, by text as I was on holiday, with no net!

So Shalean Moon was born. At first ewe went to four books, then it was "could you add a book about …"? And after that it was could I add a book about…

I made myself stop then!

Can you give us a summary of each book in the series?

Book one; Discovered is about Rach, and the discovery she makes when she moves to Scotland with her dad.

Here's the blurb…

When Rach moved to Scotland she knew there would be changes. She hadn't expected them to be quite so dramatic. Not only was there a new house, new school and new friends, there was also a secret to discover.

Brios Parde was a Patriarch in waiting. When the powerful leopard shifter senses a new Shalean he is amazed to discover it's the new girl. All his senses tell him Rach will be important to him.

However the Rogues try to destroy the budding relationship. Will Rach decide to side with Brios or help stage an uprising?

And that's just book one.

The series tells of all the problems facing Shalea, and how the young generation have to work together to overcome evil.

In future book we see how each of the friends overcome their adversities.

Book 2, Renounced, is Leira and Donny's story

Book 3, Accepted, tells of Andy and Sam, one Shalean and one human, and how the rogues try to separate them

These three books are in one print edition, entitled Beginnings.

The ebooks come out the first Friday of each month, from June 1st.

The final three books, United, Threatened and Resolved, follow the same format, starting in September. Here we find just what else is happening and how everything is resolved.

Tell us more about the setting where the story takes place.

I live in that gorgeous part of Scotland I write about in these books. So my inspiration is on my doorstep. I'm lucky enough to walk in the forest most days, my friend I walk with is used to me stopping, taking photos and muttering "Armin Stone," or "Sam's scree."

I'm lucky to have Rach and her siblings, and teenage friends here in Scotland to ask what is, who would, how is, about anything I'm not sure about. I know we'll have problems. Petzer, as my guest in The Visionary Lounge today.

Hi Anne. Thank you so much for cyberpathing all the way here from Prague, one of the world's most haunted cities where muses are never in short supply. I think I know the answer to this one already but for the benefit of our readers who inspired you to write the book?

Zvonek arrived in Prague in February, he was 9 months old and I fell in love immediately. For him
it took a few days :). Up until June he was an inside cat only. By then, he was meowing and pawing at the window to go outside. As my flat was a ground floor one and our garden was adjacent to another much larger garden, I relented. Until September it worked well, he came and went at will. One Friday night. I had friends round to dinner, and Zvonek didn't come home. Usually he would put in an appearance every two hours or so. I figured as a tom he would roam and come back in morning. For a week he didn't return. I was devastated, expecting the worst. By Friday I was really frantic and my friend help me put up posters and an internet notice. Success! By Friday night we had a response from a shelter saying they had, had a cat of his description brought the Saturday before after being hit by a car!

I went to collect him. I was asked to bring some ID of myself and a photo of him. When they
brought him into the reception area and I called his name, he started pawing the bag to get me. I
held him in my arms and cried. The staff of the shelter also were in tears at our reunion and didn't even check my ID. He was in an awful state and it took about three months for him to recover. It was then I put a cat net up on my window. The Zvonek 08 (08 because of one life lost in the car accident), series started that Christmas. The accident in the story is true however, embellished by my imagination. The first story was written during that Christmas with Zvonek spending a lot of time curled against me. :). He now is happy to go on walks with on a lead. Much safer when living in a city.

Your journey to publication:
When did it start and why?

It was my high school dream to live in Europe, have two cats and write books. After the first story, Cat on Thin Ice I wrote a follow up, Cat Among the Pigeons. I then started thinking about writing a whole series of short stories with the same characters. After about three years I re-vamped it and sent it off to a publishing company in Canada, but alas I didn't even hear back from them. Living in the Czech Republic and writing in English is almost impossible to get a publishing house to look at your work, especially being a first time writer.

A friend of my mine from a website that I belong to suggested Gypsy Shadow. I sent off my
manuscript trying not to get my hopes up. Well in less than at month they got back to me with an
offer of a contract for the entire series!

What is the core message of your novel and your intention?

I thought about this answer for awhile. My first reaction was that it's just basically a fun story about cat in Prague 10. But then I thought about the way I wrote the story. I guess it is basically good versus evil. I also wanted to bring in Czech traditions: the cats have a local pub, Whiskers, which most Czech men have, and meet there to discuss life. The Miracle of the Carp is centered around the Czech traditional Christmas dinner. In future novels there will be more themes such as these. I would also hope to promote good care of pets. An example in Return of the Rats.

How can fans local to your area connect with you?

Details of how to get my books are available on my website: www.annehpetzer.cz
It has links to the PDF and E-book formats. For information about Zvonek and albums of the places in Prague described in my book please go Zvonek's FB page, link also on Website.

Beautiful story of Zvonek and it will no doubt make an amazing series of books. Thank you so much, Anne, for being my guest.

What's On Your Nightstand?

http://www.lizrnewman.net/1/post/2012/03/whats-on-your-nightstand.html

http://www.lizrnewman.net/1/post/2012/03/whats-on-your-nightstand.html#comments

Uncategorized

Since blossoming from half writer, half mad scientist with my atomic brain imploding as I typed away on my laptop to a published author, I've been blessed to receive a ton of free books! Feels like Christmas all year round. I received a few pre-published review copies of romance novels, a couple of YA novels still in the test run phase from big publishers, and a few autographed bestsellers. So, here is what graces my nightstand at the moment:

The Big Town by Monte Schulz
Monte Schulz is the son of the great Charles Schulz, creator of Charlie Brown and The Peanuts Gang. I had the pleasure of speaking with Monte at the San Francisco Writers Conference about my next book, The Last Day King, a fantasy/time travel romance rooted in Arthurian lore. Monte teaches a course in Santa Barbara about Character Point of Views, and after hearing multiple agents describe the criteria for what makes a novel a bestseller and advocating the use of limited POVs, Monte was very vocal in his stance that the writer should make their own decision about how many POVs are necessary to tell the story and not limit themselves to the standard three to five. It is refreshing to hear someone who thinks about the literature first and marketability second, rather than the other way around.

Love From A Heart by Teresa Le-Yung Ryan
Teresa is a formidable woman who brings to mind the word "powerhouse." I haven't had a chance to read her book yet but I already adore her as an author.

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
An editor described my next novel, The New Orleans Way, as Anna Karenina meets Gone With The Wind, so of course I had to pick this one up. Strangely, I am picturing Stepan Arkadyevich as someone similar to Arnold Scwarzenegger. Well, there is the opening matter about the governess.

Snow Flower and The Secret Fan by Lisa See
Another autographed book I will cherish forever. Although her novels leave me a bit traumatized afterwards, I still come back. Her writing is like tequila.

Sanctuary Cove by Rochelle Alers
Category genre romance which I am always compelled to by but rarely holds my interest. Nice to know it's there for me, though.

How To Listen So The Kids Will Talk and How To Talk So The Kids Will Listen by Adele Faber
The kids are listening now so my bookmark has stayed on Chapter Five.

The Tiger's Wife by Tea Obreht
I bought this book because I saw a picture of Tea Obreht and she is extraordinarily beautiful. Book's quite good as well.

The Iron Knight by Julie Kagawa
Another freebie from the Writers Conference. Kagawa's Iron Series is entertaining. It's like reading Lewis Carrol if he wrote while sober.

The Romance Sells Catalog
An Affinity for Shadows is featured in this catalog that goes out to 6,300 booksellers and librarians. Yet another move to get the book on the shelves at all national chains. This catalog is pure entertainment as there are a lot of category romances with funny titles. My favorite is Never Love A Logger. Now that's advice I can take to heart.

A Journal
The journal began with "Project Me" back in February as an effort to take off five extra pounds I've been carrying around. The five extra pounds were lost, but along came a nasty virus that had me eating saltine crackers, croissants, and cup o noodles everyday for about two weeks, so welcome back five pounds! I figured it's pretty pointless to start a diet before Spring anyhow. Our bodies really do need those winter coats.

That's it, besides some body cream, random notebooks and folders that I plan to get to someday. There was a time when I just had a television remote on my nightstand. Now I have all the channels I can handle in the way of books. Although I am still staring at the Song of Fire and Ice series, aka Game of Thrones, on my bookshelf. Someday, George R.R. Martin. Might be long after the next season is over, but someday. Having too many books to read is a very good problem to have.
